Genetics

The field of biology devoted to understanding how characteristics are transmitted from parents to offspring.

Heredity

The transmission of characteristics from parents to offspring.

Allele

Each of two or more alternative forms of a gene.

Dominant

Masked, or dominated the factor for the other trait or pair.

Recessive

Relating to heritable characteristics controlled by genes that are expressed in offspring only when inherited from both parents.

Genotype

An organism's genetic makeup.

Phenotype

An organism's appearance.

Heterozygous

When the two alleles in the pair are different, the organism is Heterozygous.

Homozygous

When both alleles of a pair are alike.

Hybrid

The offspring of two plants or animals of different species.

Purebred

Bred from parents of the same breed.

Punnett Square

Diagram, to aid them in predicting the probable distribution of inherited traits in the offspring.

Probability

The likelihood that a possible future event will occur in any given instance of the event.

Pedigree

A diagram that shows the occurrence of a genetic trait in several generations of a family.

Genetic Carrier

A person or other organism that has inherited a recessive allele for a genetic trait or mutation but does not display that trait or show symptoms of the disease.

Inbreeding

The crossing or mating of plants or animals with close relatives.

Sex Linked Trait

A trait that is determined by a gene found on one of the sex chromosomes, such as the X chromosomes or the Y chromosome in humans.

Incomplete Dominance

A condition in which a trait in an individual is intermediate between the phenotype of the individual's two parents because the dominant allele is unable to express itself fully.

Codominance

A condition in which both alleles for a gene are fully expressed.

F1 Generation

The first generation of offspring obtained from an experimental cross of two organisms.

P Generation

Parental generation, the first two individuals that mate in a genetic cross.
