Transitions

Transversions
A pyrimidine is changed to purine, or vise versa
Silent mutation
Point mutation that doesn't change encoded amino acid
Missense mutation
Causes a change in the encoded amino acid. Can be neutral if it doesn't alter folding of formation of protein.
Nonsense mutation
An amino acid encoding codon is change to a STOP codon
ex. sickle cell anemia
Frameshift mutation
Causes mRNA reading frame to be shifted. (addition or deletion of nucleotide.)
Operon
A cluster of genes of related function under the control of some regulatory elements.
Inducible operon
OFF until it is needed. Expression occurs due to binding of an effector to repressor
Repressible operon
ON until it is no longer needed. Expression is repressed due to binding of an effector to repressor.
