Genotype

The genetic make-up of an organsm

Phenotype

The physical characteristics of an individual e.g. hair, eye colour

Heterozygous

When the alleles are different e.g. Hh

Homozygous

When the alleles are the same e.g. HH,hh

Allele

Different forms of a gene

Dominant

A allele that will always show if present in the genotype

Recessive

A allele that will only show if more than one of it is present in the genotype

Gene

A unit of heredity, that determines some of the characteristics of the offspring

DNA

DNA is a large molecule that resembles a double helix shape and is responsible for determining the physical characteristics of organisms.

Chromosome

A structure found in the Nucleus of Cells that contains DNA and carries genes

Base Pairing Rule

The double helix is held together by rungs that contain pairs of chemical called bases. The pairs are A+T and G+C

Trait

Our characteristics and features that make us look and act a certain way.

Mitosis

A type of cell division that produces new body cells. All the cells produced have the same genes as the original cell.

Meiosis

Meiosis is the type of cell division that produces that produces new sex cells. All new cells formed are genetically different to each other

Sexual Reproduction

The production of a new living organism by combining genetic information from two people of different sexes

Asexual Reproduction

A type of reproduction that only requires one parent. The offspring are identical to the parent and to each other

Sex cell

A sperm or egg. Only has half the amount of chromosomes to a body cell

Zygote

A fertilised egg

Fertilisation

The process of fertilizing an why, involving the fusion of make and female gametes to form a zygote.

Nucleus

Inside the cell what the genetic material is found

How many chromosomes do we each have in our body?

46

Cell>_______________________

Cell>Nucleus>Chromosomes>DNA

Where in the cell is DNA found?

In the chromosomes

What is a trait?

All the things that make us different like eye colour, hair colour, skin colour etc

Do we have the same traits?

No because we all have different genes.
