Genetics is the study of heredity.(ie the way in which characteristics are passed on from parents to offspring.

Inherited characteristics

Are decided by our genes e.g skin colour ,eye colour ,hair colour.

Non-inherited characteristics

Are the traits learned during our life e.g accent ,musical instruments,singing ,writing ,driving

A gene is a small section of DNA found along a chromosome which controls our characteristics.

A chromosome

A chromosome is a thread like structure found in the nucleus of a cell.It's made up of protein and DNA.

What is each characteristic controlled by ?

It's controlled by 2 genes (one from your mother ,the other from your father )

Normal body cells have how many chromosomes ?

46 chromosomes or 23 pairs altogether(23 maternal chromosomes and 23 paternal chromosomes .

How many chromosomes does a sex cell have ?

A sex cell (sperm and eggs) have only 23 chromosomes .

A dominant gene

A dominant gene is one which always works and controls the characteristic.It's given a capital letter.

A recessive gene

Is one which doesn't work in the presence of a dominant gene.It given a small letter.
