Activated Charcoal
Powder, usually premixed with water, that will absorb some poisons and help prevent them from being absorbed by the body.
Oral Glucose
Given by mouth to treat an awake patient (who is able to swallow) with an altered mental status and a history of diabetes. (form of sugar)
Indications
Specific signs or circumstances under which it is appropriate to administer a drug to a patient.
Contraindications
Specific signs or circumstances under which it is not appropriate and may be harmful to administer a drug to a patient.
Nitroglycerin
A drug that helps dilate the coronary vessels that supply the heart muscle with blood.
(Pill or Spray)
Epinephrine
A drug that helps to constrict the blood vessels and relax passages of the airway. It may be used to counter severe allergic reaction.
Nitro (Pill or Spray)
Indications -
Chest pain of suspected cardiac origin

Contraindications -
Systolic BP under 100.
ED Drugs (Viagra, Cialis, Levitra) or herbal equivalant.
Hypotension.
Trauma.
Pediatrics.
ICH (Internal Cranial Hemorrhage)
Patient has already met maximum dose prior to EMT-Arrival.

Dose: 0.4mg = 1 Tablet/Spray
If no relief in 5 minutes and BP > 100.
Max 3 tablets

Given - Sublingual

Vasodilator - Opens blood vessels.

*Side effects- Hypotension, Headache, Dizziness, Pulse rate changes.
EpiPen (Auto-injector)
Indications -
*Severe allergic reaction
*Hives, Itching, SOB, Flushed Skin.

*Contraindications -
*Anaphylaxis (true allergic reaction)
*NOT in anaphylaxis = Over 50yo w/Cardiac hx., Hypertensive (Sys >140 or Dias >90), HR greater than 140 in adults and 180 in children
-Actions
*Bronchodilator (Opens airway)
*Vasoconstrictor (closes blood vessels)

Dose:
*.3 = Adult Epi-Pen
*.15 = Pediatric Epi-Pen

Admin route = Intramuscular (IM) Lateral thigh, hold for 10 seconds.

++Check clarity of medicatins (CLEAR)
++may be traded as Adrenaline.

*Side effects: Increases HR, Hypertension, Palpitations, Jitterness, Headache, Nausea, Vomiting.
Metered Dose Inhaler (MDI)
-Indications
* Shortness of Breath

-Contraindications
*Decreased LOC, Unconscious, Not their medications, Already met prescribed dosage.

-Dosage
*1 puff, rest 1 minute, 1 puff = 1 dose (if Dr. order not known or Dr. Order)

-Admin Route-
*Inhaled, shake and warm to room temperature before administration.

*Increased HR, nervousness, tremors.
