What is the normal?

A line drawn at right angles to the boundary between the two media.

What are some of the differences between the object and the image?

Object: real, can touch

Image: upright, laterally inverted (left becomes right, right becomes left)

What does the law of reflection state?

i = r

Angle of incidence (i) must ALWAYS be equal to angle of reflection (r)

Define refraction of light

It is the change of direction of a light ray when it crosses a boundary between two transparent substances.

Why does light split up into different colours when it passes through a triangular prism?

In a prism, the light has to pass through two surfaces that are NOT PARALLEL. Therefore every colour emerging from the prism is travelling in a different direction.

Finish the sentence

If the speed is reduced...?

Refraction is towards the normal.

Finish the sentence

If the speed is increased...?

Refraction is away from the normal.

What happens to the waves when they are exactly in line with the normal?

The direction does not change.

However it does slow down.

Define diffraction

The spreading out of waves as they pass through a gap or round the edge of an obstacle.

The amount of diffraction depends on the size of the gap compared to the size of the wave.

What happens when a wave goes through a:

a) Wide gap?

b) Narrow gap?

a) Diffraction still happens but not as much.

b) Diffraction happens, and the effects are more significant.

Why might people living in hilly areas have poor radio reception?

Hills act as an obstacle for radio waves.

Diffraction takes place and the waves spread outward.

As a result, the houses in the valleys behind the hills have poor radio reception.
