1908- 5 shillings a week, or 7 shillings 5d (pence) to a married couple. TO be eligible you had to be over 70 and have lived in Britain for at least 20 years

1909- 3000 people put into jobs by labour exchanges every day
When was the national insurance act passed? What did it do to help people?
1911- Allowed sick pay, 10 Shillings a week for 26 weeks for a weekly payment of 4d. Also provided unemployment benefit, though this was quite small to stop people 'enjoying' the benefits. Also entitled people to free medical treatment.

The Germans were surpassing the British in industrial capacity, and this appeared to be due to their well-educated and healthy workforce.

A great number of British men were found to be significantly unhealthy; so unhealthy in fact that two thirds of those offering to fight for their country were turned down on medical grounds.
