What were the traditional industries?

Coal, iron and steal.

Why had traditional industries declined by the early 1930's?

They employed more people than they should have. In 1939 136,000 miners were employed. This meant that they couldn't afford to spend money on machinery as they were paying their staff. Coaling stations around the world saw a decline in their tre because of this.

How many British people were unemployed in 1933?

30 million people were unemployed during this time and 3 million of them were British.

What were the worst affected areas of unemployment?

South Wales and North-East England.

How did cinema's help during the depression?

They would show uplifting films and make people forget about the real world and the troubles they faced. 23 million tickets would be sold a week and 4776 cinemas were in Britain.

What were the main interests of entertainment during 1939?

Boxing, rugby and football.

How did the government tackle the problems caused by the depression?

They set up an unemplyment act in 1934 and the unemplyment assistance boards.

What was the Beveridge report?

It was set up in 1942 by William Beveridge. It was set up to help the improvement of social


security. A popular quote was 'from the cradle to the grave' it was to make sure that the state would look after their citizens.

What were the five Giants?

ignorance, want, squalor, disease and idleness.

What did the British people expect the government to improve?

National insurance, education, health, employment and housing.
