Fertility treatment

Is medical intervention to help a couple to have a child who cannot have one naturally, e.g. IVF

Cloning

Creating a genetic duplicate of a person plant or animal

Abortion

Is medical intervention to end a pregnancy leading to the death of the foetus

Euthanasia

Ending life to relieve suffering

Voluntary euthanasia

The person asks to have their life ended

Involuntary euthanasia

The person is not involved in the decision

Suicide

Self murder; ending your own life.

The Use of Animals in Medical Research

250 million animals a year are used are used in research

We should allow fertility treatment because...

It is a form of healing; Jesus was a healer

Agape

Doing the kindest thing in any situation, e.g. allowing abortion if someone was raped

The Golden Rule

‘Do unto others as you would have them do to you’

You can't do anything that creates new life or ends life because...

Only God has the right to give and take life

Creating or ending life

Goes against God’s plan so is a sin

Some Christians see this as adultery (cheating on your partner)

Use of donor eggs or sperm

Fertility treatment can be seen as wrong as it

Produces spare embryos which are disposed of (they would say killing new life)

Paedophiles.

Not everyone is a suitable parent

Catholic view re: abortion

It is only acceptable to end the pregnancy if it would put the mother’s life in danger, e.g. an ectopic pregnancy.

Our bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit

so destroying them would be wrong

The sixth commandment tells us

Thou shalt not kill.’

Life is a gift from God

And therefore sacred

Man was given ‘dominion’ over the world

And so a responsibility to put things right (e.g. cloning to find out about genetically inherited diseases or carrying out animal experiments to cure disease)

Therapeutic cloning replaces human tissues lost during illness or accident or disability.

This is caring for God’s creation.

Human embryos are destroyed in genetic engineering

Many Christians see this as killing a human life

A loving God would not want to see us suffer

So let people die if they want to

Suicide is a cry for help

And therefore these people should be treated with compassion

The doctrine of the double effect

This is that if a person needs so much pain relief that it speeds death this is acceptable as death is a side-effect of pain relief not the purpose of the use of drugs

Animal experiments for medical purposes are acceptable because

Animals are below humans as they do not have a soul and are not made in the image of God

The Bible teaches that humans have dominion (control)

So we can do what we want with animals

Animal experiments have saved lives

e.g. pigs: stroke research, guinea pigs: discovery of vaccines - diphtheria & TB.

Animals suffer - testing is wrong

Our consciences that tell us this are the voice of God

Christians are stewards of the earth

And should therefore look after animals

Animals have different biology

So we can’t be sure the results will be the same on humans.

Hospices

where pain management and counseling are offered are seen as an alternative to euthanasia.

We are made in the image of God

So all human life is sacred (very precious)
