What is a Cultural System?
Collection of interacting elements that, when taken together, shape the collective identity of a group.

Internal Variation is possible within Cultural System. Such as Protestants and Lutherans both following Catholic practices.
Define Religion!
Belief system and a set of practices that recognize a power higher than humans.
What has been the most important influence towards changing religious beliefs over time?
The conversion of one belief to another.

Marked by missionizing- which could also be coined as 'propaganda' or 'persuasion' with the attempted conversion of non-Christian souls.
What is Diaspora?
Spatial dispersion of a previously homogeneous group.

Due in part to the large-scale movement of populations along with global political changes, it is hard to pinpoint where religions are most common exited because they have continued to disperse so far from their original places of practice.
Hinduism- where did it start? What other religions came about because of it?
Originated in the lowlands of the subcontinent of India- Punjab. Started about 4000 years ago.

Reform Religions that came out of Hinduism:
- Buddhism, appearing around 500 BC
- Sikhism, 15th century.
Judaism, Christianity and Islam?
Where/When did they originate?
All originated in the semitic-speaking deserts of the Middle East.

- Judaism originated 4000 years ago
- Christianity originated 2000 years ago
- Islam originated 1300 years ago.
When future trends are taken into account, where is it expected that the utmost majority of Roman Catholics will be found?

Along with Religion, what is considered to be the most important cultural factor, and why
Language.
Without language, the transmission of culture from one generation to the next would be impossible.
What are the three things that Language is divided into?
Language Family- A collection of individual languages believed to be related in their prehistoric origin. For example, approx. 50% of the world's people speak a language that is derived from the Indo-European world.

Language Branch- Collection of languages that possess a definite common origin, but split into different languages.

Language Group- Collection of several languages that are a part of a Language Branch and share a common ancestry as well as similar grammar and vocab.
What is a Cultural Hearth?
Geographical origin, or source of innovations and ideas. Almost always consistent speculation on language's cultural hearths is happening.
