Three categories of protists

* animal-like

* plant-like

* fungus-like

How can we tell which category a particular protist belongs to?
Depending on how they eat/obtain their food/energy
How do autotrophs make energy?
Makes own food through photosynthesis
How do heterotrophs make energy?
Eats other organisms to obtain energy
How do decomposers make energy?
Breaks down dead and decaying matter and absorbs nutrients
What characteristics do we use to separate animal-like protists into different groups?

* how they move/gather food

* do they have flagella, cilia or pseudopodia

What is a characteristic that is similar to both fungi and protists?
Eukaryotic cells
What are decomposers?
Organisms that break down dead or decaying matter to release nutrients. Will then absorb these nutrients.
What is the difference between saprophytes, symbiotes, parasites?

* Sparophytes are true decomposers – feed on dead tissue;

* symbiotes have mutually beneficial relationship between a fungus and other organism;

* parasite feeds on living tissue of a host – causes harm

How do the hyphae help fungi to break down food and eat?

* hyphae release enzymes that help break down dead and decaying matter;

* hyphae will then absorb the nutrients released from broken down matter to use as food/energy

What is a fruiting body and what is its purpose in respect to fungi?

* part we see above ground,

* made up of hyphae,

* only makes up small part of fungi,

* produces spores -> reproductive part of fungi

Describe a symbiotic relationship that fungi is involved in.
Mycorrhizae – fungi grows on plant roots, fungi increases plant nutrient and water absorption, plant makes food for fungi. Liches – fungi and algae grow together, fungi provides structure and breaks down material, algae provides food for fungi
What are some benefits of fungi?

* decompose dead plant/animal,

* we can eat mushrooms,

* help make bread, beer, wine,

* help develop penicillin and vaccines,

* have symbiotic relationships

What are ways fungi are harmful?

* attack grains/fruit,

* some people have mold allergies,

* can cause fungal infections in humans,

* can produce toxins by poisonous mushrooms
