The Three main functions of the Nervous

System are...

Sensory Input, Integration, and Motor Output

Receptors within and near the body surface

respond to stimuli and send nerve impulses

to the CNS.

Sensory Input

The CNS receives, processes and interprets

sensory input and decides what to do via

sensory output.

Integration

CNS sends out impulses to effector organs

(muscles and glands) in response to sensory

output.

Motor output

-Brain and Spinal cord

-tracts

-integrative and communicative centers

-sends impulses to peripheral nervous system

Central Nervous System

-Cranial and Spinal nerves

-Communication between CNS and body

Peripheral Nervous System
Divisions of the Peripheral Nervous System

Sensory (Afferent) Division

Motor (Efferent) Division

Conducts impulses from receptors to CNS

Afferent Nerve

Nerve fibers that conduct impulses from the

CNS to Skeletal muscles. Division of Peripheral Nervous System. Composed of Somatic

motor fibers.

Somatic Nervous System

Division of Peripheral Nervous System,

consists of visceral motor nerve fibers that

regulate smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and

glands.
