Reticular activating system (RAS)
a poorly defined network that extends from the hypothalamus to the medulla, mediates arousal. Brainstem
the 2 types of sensory experiences
I. the external sesation- visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, tactile
II. Internal- Kinesthetic and Visceral
define Kinesthetic
refers to the awarness of positioning of body parts and body movement
define viseral sensory
pertains to the awarness of the inner organs
what 4 conditions are necesary for a sensory experience?
1. a stimulus-an agent act or other influence capable of initiating a response by the nervous system
2.Receptor or sense organ to recieve the stimulus
3.Impulse to the brain; intact nervous pathway
4. sensation created by the brain to translate the experience.
define:
sensory deficit
Impaired or absent functioning on one or more senses. Ex. impaired sight or hearing
define:
sensory deprivation
insufficient or momotonous stimuli. the RAS is no longer able to project normal levels of activation to the brain.
define:
sensory overload
excessive stimuli; feels out of control, brain can't process
