Shooting Policy 304.11

Members of the Sheriff's Office may resort to the use of a firearm pursuant to law, when it reasonably appears to be necessary, and generally:

A.

An officer may use deadly force to protect themselves or others from what they reasonably believe would be an immediate threat of death or serious bodily injury.

B.

An officer may use deadly force to effect the arrest or prevent the escape of a suspected felon where the officer has probable cause to believe that the suspect poses a significant threat of death or serious bodily injury to the officer or others. Under such circumstances, a verbal warning should precede the use of deadly force, where feasible.

C.

To stop a dangerous animal.

D.

To euthanize an animal.

E.

For target practice at a shooting range or an approved training location.

F.

To signal or sound for alarm (i.e. Search and Rescue in areas where no radio contact is available).

G.

To provide "cover fire" during tactical operations.

H.

To render safe a suspected explosive device (as used by the Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team).
