What is a front?
an area where two air masses meet and do not mix.
Cold Front
forms when cold air moves underneath warm air. cloudy skies, and lots of vapor brings heavy rain or snowfall. after a cold front, clear skie and cooler temps
Warm Front
forms when warm air moves over cold air. if it is humid, showers and light rain fall. if dry, scattered clouds form. after it passes weather is warm and humid. and in winter it brings snow.
Starionary Front
forms when a war and cold air mass meet but neither can move the other. rain, snow, fog or clouds. if it remains, may bring clouds and precipitation.
Occluded Front
forms when a warm air mass is caught between two cool air masses and cut off from the ground. cloudy, rainy, or snow
What are the three main types of clouds?
Cumulus, stratus, and cirrus
Cumulus Clouds
look like fluffy, rounded piles of cotton. forms less than 2 kilometers of the ground. usually indicate fair weather. Cummulus = heap or mass
Stratus Clouds
form in flat layers. strato=spread out. usually cover all or most of sky. as they thicken, they may produce drizzle, rain, or snow. and they are then called nimbostratus
Cirrus Clouds
wispy, feathery, only form at high levels, above 6 kilo. where temps are very low. mostly made ofice crystals.
Cumulonimbus Clouds
Towering clouds with flat topes often produce thunderstorms also called thunderheads
Cirostratus Clouds
"A ring around the sun or moon brings rain or snow upon you soon"
Air mass
A huge body of air that has similar temperature, humidity, and air pressure throughout it
What are the 2 main characteristics used to classify air masses?
temperature and humidity
Tropical Air Masses
warm air masses form in the tropics and have low air pressure
Polar air masses
cold air masses form north of 50 degrees north latitude and south of 50 degrees south latitude. have high air pressure
Maritime air masses
form over oceans. water evaporated from the oceans, so the air can become very humid.
Continenetal air masses
form over land, in the middle of continents, and are dry
4 major types of air masses
Maritime tropical, Continental tropical, maritime polar, and continental polar
Maritime Tropical
warm, humid air. forms over oceans near the tropics. in winter they brin heave rain or snowfall
Maritime Polar
Cool humid, form over the icy cold North Pacific and North atlantic oceans. bring fog rain adn cool temps
Continental Tropical
hot dry air masses. only form in summer. bring hot dry weather.
Continental Polar
bring cool cold air. in winter, they bring clear, cold dry air.
