Fixation

- inability to progress normally from one stage to another
- ie. as an adult, fixation shows up as focusing on needs that were overgratified

Stage 1: Oral

- Birth to 1.5 years
- pleasure in mouth activities, ie. sucking, biting
- can result in demanding, infantile or dependent behavior, overeating, smoking

Stage 2: Anal

- Age 1.5 to 3
- "toddler phase"
- child is being toilet trained
- pleasure and control in bowel movements
- can result in overly controlling (anal-retentive) or easily angered personality (anal-expulsive)

Stage 3: Phallic

- Age 3 to 5
- Pleasure in genitals
- Oedipal complex is experienced, resolved at end of stage via development of superego
- Can result in guilt/anxiety about sex or sexually exploiting others without regarding their needs

Stage 4: Latency

- Age 6 to 10 (puberty)
- sexuality is latent/dormant
- sexual and aggressive drives expressed in socially acceptable forms

Stage 5: Genital

- Age 10 through adulthood
- pleasure in genitals; sexual urges return
- concern for others' wellbeing
