Four nutritional classifications of bacteria?

  1. Autotrophs
  2. Heterotrophs
  3. Phototrophs
  4. Chemotrophs

Autotrophs

  • Bacteria that can take inorganic substances into their bodies and transform them into organic nourishment
  • Use CO2 as principal carbon source

Heterotrophs

  • Bacteria that require an organic carbon source for nutrients
  • Cannot form their own food

Phototrophs

  • Use light for the synthesis of energy
  • Synthesize energy using photosynthesis

Chemotrophs

  • Bacteria which obtain chemical energy from their surroundings and convert it into adenosine triphosphate (ATP) for cellular use
  • Uses oxidation reduction reactions as primary energy source
