solution

a value or values that make a mathematical sentence true

compare

In mathematics, there is often more than one way to solve a problem. For example, there is an alternate way of solving equations.
Because 2x + 4 can be written as 2(x + 2), it is possible to divide both sides of the equation by 2 (multiply by ) before subtracting. The important thing to remember is that it must be done to every term of the equation.
(2x) + (4) = (12)
x + 2 = 6
Now subtract 2:
x = 4

Reminder:

We may write terms in a different order:
3 - w can be written as
-w + 3
So, we can think that w has been multiplied by -and then 3 has been added.

Use inverse operations to

solve an equation.

To solve equations that have addition or subtraction combined with multiplication or division,

add or subtract first.

When checking a solution,

be sure to follow the order of operations
