Phrase
The smallest structural unit normally concluded by a cadence.
Rhythmic Cadence
the conclusion using one or two measures to display rhythmic changes subtly with the patterns at the end.
Retrograde
When a motives notes in reverse order occurs.
Two part Binary Form
Three basic harmonic organizational plans for a phrase
1. repeat a cadence
2. Prolonging the cadence chord
3. the addition of a final cadence after a deceptive cadence
Sequence, real and tonal
S- happens when two or more transpositions occur in succession
R- transposition the exact quality of each interval in the original motive is retained
T- transposition happens if there is any variance in interval quality
Cadential relationship of a phrase groupings
(incomplete & complete) the first phrase clearly expresses its harmonic dependence on the next phrase, we sense a need for one or more phrases to complete the musical idea.
Two Phrase Period
a question and answer relationship a fact we recognize by calling them the antecedent and consequent phrase.
Three Phrase Period
regardless the number of phrases involved, the cadences generally progress from relatively weak to relatively strong.
Four Phrase Periods
Often referred to as double periods where the first and third phrases are frequently in parallel construction although parallel and contrasting phrases are not uncommon.
Repeated Phrase
involves variation, secondary ornamentation accompaniment figuration, dynamics or scoring. It also possesses the same rhythmic weight as a four phrase period, repeat signs are used.
Symmetrical Period
Phrase with an equal number of measures
Asymmetrical Period
Contains phrases of different lengths.
Five methods of connecting a phrase
1. Continuation of an accompaniment pattern of figuration.
2. Continuous movement of one or more voice parts with an anacrustic function to the next part

4. Elision
5. Overlapping
Modulating Period
When the key changes whether it be to its relative major or minor within a period.
Rounded Binary Form
When the second phrase of part A returns as the second phrase of part B.
Harmonically closed
when a part terminates on the home key with an incomplete cadence or in some other key with either a complete or incomplete cadence. (Authentic)
Harmonically Open
When a part ends in an alternate key or in an incomplete cadence from the original key.
Ternary Form
A three part composition where the third part is a repeat of the first part. (ABA) The B section generally expresses both a contrasting key and thematic material.
