importance of structural diversity in forest
canopy captures sunlight, photosynthesizes food. next layer, smaller trees, shrubs, herbs. another level of structure and also important in succession. nitrogen fixation. standing deadwood provides a variety of habitats for birds, small mammals. lowest layer coarse woody debris, decaying plant matter, including rotting logs and nurse logs - providing a variety of niches for young trees, ferns, liverworts, mosses, etc. and other plants not requiring much light. also wood borers that help to break log down.
How have the characteristics of trees been utilized by human society?
harvest forest, cut all to keep what we need for building, fibre, firewood, paper, etc.
biological diversity importance in forest
diverse makeup of animal life helps to maintain structural diversity - squirrels helping plant trees of best cones, birds eliminating insect pests, providing fresh fertilizer and nitrates, fecal matter and decaying flesh adding to forest floor. genetic diversity and variety of species helps defend against disease adn pests. strong forest system makes coping with natural events easier - deeper, better soil, etc.
Define structural diversity
multiple layers of interacting organisms, some growing, some decaying, all part of the structure of the forest
What special characteristics of wood give trees their ecological role in terrestrial ecosystems?
strength - allows trees to grow large, and durability allows them to withstand the elements for long periods of time.
Two types of diversity in forest
structural and biological
