Physical Evidence
Any and all OBJECTS that can establish that a crime has been commited or can provide a link b/w a crime and its victim/perpetrator
Real Evidence
Includes objects of any kind (guns, maps, documents)
Testimony
statements made by competent witness
Direct Evidence
eyewitness evidence; testimony that a person seen walking in the rain is direct evidence that they walked in the rain
Circumstantial Evidence
can be used to prove the truth of falsity of a fact at issue; a testimony that the person was seen indoors w/ wet shoes is circumstantial evidence that they have walked in the rain
Spiral Search Method
The searcher starts in the middle of the ring and continues in an ever widening circle until the whole area is searched. This is used when only one person is available to search.
Grid Method
A grid search is simply two parallel searches, offset by 90 degrees, performed one after the other.
Strip/line Search
many people line up together and walk shoulder to shoulder and then turn around and come back
Quadrant/Zone Search
The area is divided into different quadrants and one or two people search each section
Chain of Custody
Refers to the maintaining of a "log" of who handled the evidence
Standard/Reference Sample
Evidence who's origins are known in order to compare them to crime scene evidence
Substrate/Control Sample
Uncontaminated surface material near an area where PE has been deposited to ensure the sample doesnt interfere w/ lab tests
