Frame of Reference

A staionary object or group of objects used to determine a position change. All motion is change in position. You can tell that something has moved if its position changes relative to something else.

What is the formula to find the speed of an object?
|
Speed is equal to the distance divided by time S=D/T
|

What is speed?
|
The amount of distance something moves in a certain period of time

What is velocity?
|
The direction and speed of a moving object. EX a car travelling 50 MPH nw could have as change in this by changing direction or speed or both

What is a force?
|
A push or a pull that acts to slow things down or speed them up -start them or stop them. This causes a change in velocity. It alos is neccesary for acceleration to happen.

What is acceleration?
|
A change in velocity divided by the time it takes for that change to occur. For example - if a car accelerates from 30 mph to 40 and a bike from 0 to 10 their acceleration is the same even though they are travelling at different speeds (10 acceleration)

What is the Law of Inertia?
|
The tendency of matter to resist a change in its state of motion. for example a man trying to move a box but has difficulty because this is acting upon the box making it resist change

the inertia, For example, you could escape an elephant that was chasing you if you ran in a zigzag pattern because the greater the inertia of the elephant would not allow the elephant to make a rapid changes of a zigzag pattern

What is an example of two balanced forces at work?
|
Two teams are having a tug of war. Neither team is winning because they are applying an equal force on each side.

What is the opposite of balanced forces?
|
unbalanced forces

What is net force?
|
The total of all the forces acting on an object. For example - you and a friend are pushing a cart of books down the hallway. You are applying this.

What is surface tension?
|
It is the force that occurs a the surface of a liquid. For example, a needle floating at the top of water is held there by this.

What is magnetic force?
|
It can push or pull. It works between magnetic poles, NOrth and south. They are opposite each other (N pushes south and pull north to north/south to south)

What is an electrical force?
|
It acts between objects that have an electrical charge. It pulls charged objects.

What is friction?
|
it is a force that acts between any surface in contact with one another. It prevents motion or slows it down.

What is a gravitational force?
|
A force that acts between any two masses in the universe and pulls them towards each other.

What is gravity?
|
The force that pulls us and everything around us toward the center of the earth.

What is the only thing that the force of gravity on earth depends on?
|
The objects mass. The more mass the more of this

What is weight?
|
The measurement of the force of gravity on an object. It is most affected by gravitational force.
