first marine landing took place during the Revolutionary War. They invaded New Providence Island, Bahamas to seize guns and supplies. Gained the nickname Leatherneck due to the uniform of the day having a stiff leather stock around the neck.

Marines stormed the Barbary pirates at Burma on the shores of Tripoli. Raised the Stars and stripes for the first time in the Eastern Hemisphere.

|
Under the command of Col Robert E. Lee, Marines stormed the US arsenal at Harper's Ferry to put down an attempted slave revolt lead by John Brown.

The Marine Corps adopted the eagle, globe and anchor. Brigidair General Jacob Zeilin, 7th Commandant modified it. Eagle symbolizing nation and the globe and anchor signifying worldwide services and sea traditions.

|
Marines landed in France. Participated in 8 distinct operations and were awarded the French Fourragere which is still worn by members of the 5th and 6th marines.

Marine Corps was reorganized in the FMF establishing command and administrative relations btwn the Fleet and the Corps. The Equipment board was est at Quantico, VA to test and develop materials for landing operations and expeditionary service.

1965
|
Marines landed in South Vietnam which began the longest war in its history. Marines also landed in the Dominican Republic to evacuate and protect US citizens from an attempted coup of the local government.

1982
|
Marines deployed to Lebanon as part of a multinational peacekeeping force in an effort to restore peace and order. Displayed the concept of a force of readiness. On 23 Oct 1983 a suicide bomb attack killed 241 Americans and wounded 70 others. The last unit withdrew in July 1984.

1991
|
Operation Desert Storm was launched after the Iraqi government refused to comply with UN resolutions. Aviation was heavily used when the air phase commenced in Jan 1991. Marine ground forces swept into Kuwait and liberated the country causing severe damage to the Iraqi military capability.

2001
|
after the 9/11 terrorist attacks on NYC and DC, units deployed to the arabian sea and in Nov 2001 set up a fwd operating command in southern Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. Marked the beginning of War on Terror. On 25 Nov, the 15th MEU arrived in Afghanistan becoming the first team of US ground troops in the region, to set up Camp Rhino south of Kandahar. Mission Swift Freedom sealed the city cutting off incoming supplies and escape routes.

|
19 Mar 2003 Operation Iraqi Freedom began. The government of Saddam Hussein was demolished in 3 weeks. Battle of Nasiriyah occured 23-29 Mar 2003, the first major battle of the Iraq war, Marines were tasked with capturing 2 out of 3 key bridges over the Euphrates

|
31 Mar 2004, iraqi insurgents in Fallujah ambushed a convoy contatining four American private miltary contractors from Blackwater USA. In April 2004, the first battle of Fallujah, Operation Vigilant Resolve to capture or koll those responsible for the deaths of the blackwater security team.

|
7 Nov 2004, Operation Phantom Fury (Operation Al Fajr) the bloodiest battle of the war in Iraq, launched to recapture the city of Fallujah. Resulted in the death of over 1350 insurgent fighters, 95 American troops and 560 wounded. On 13 Nov, the town was fully occupied by US forces.

Battle Belleu Wood
|
Belleau Wood, France during WWI, marines help crush a German offensive that threatened Paris. The french renamed the area the wood of the Brigade of Marines. German Intelligence evaluated the Marines as storm troops and the German troops nicknamed their troops Teufelhunden or Devil Dogs.

Battle of Guadalcanal
|
7 Aug 1942, the 1st Mar div landed on the beaches of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands and launched the 1st US offensive of WWII. The first combat test of new amphibious doctrine and a crucial turning point of the war in the Pacific by providing a base to launch further ivasions of Japanese-held islands. Amphibious landings followed on New Georgia, Choiseul, and Bougainville.

Battle of Tarawa
|
Gilbert Islands were the first in line of advance for the offensive in the Central Pacific. The prime objective was the Tarawa Atoll and Betio Island which was fortified to the point that the Japanese commander said it would take a millon Americans 100 yrs to conquer it. On 20 Nov 1943 the marines landed and secured it within 76 hours. Due to having to offload hundreds of yds from the beach, marines suffered heavy losses from enemy fire and drowning.

Battle of Mariana Islands
|
For airfields for the Air Force and advanced bases for the Navy, the Marianas were invaded. Landed on Saipan, Guam and Tinian. In June and July 1943 Lt Gen Holland Smith led an invasion force of Marines and soilders that totaled over 136,000. The greatest number of troops to operate in the field under Marine command.

Battle of Iwo Jima
|
19 Feb 1945, Marines landed on Iwo Jima in the largest and bloodiest all marine battle in history. Corps suffered over 23,000 casualties. Adm Nimitz said "Among the Americans who served on Iwo Island, uncommon valor was a common virtue".

Battle Of Chosin Reservoir
|
Nov 1950 Marines were cut off after the Chinese Communist Forces entered the war. Faced a 10 division force but they smashed 7 enemy divisions in their march from Chosin Reservoir. The Marines brought out all operable equipment, properly evacuated their wounded and dead, and maintained tatical integrity.

Battle of Hue City
|
During the holiday of Tet in Jan 1968, communist forces launched a surprise offensive by infiltrating large numbers of their troops into the major centers of Hue City. A unit of NVA troops occupied the city of Hue and the Citadel. Fighting was house to house with progress measured in yds. The city was secured on 25 Feb 1968.

Archibald Henderson
|
Brig General. became Commandant in 1820 and held his command for 39 years until his death. Led the corps thru the Indian wars, the War with Mexico, and the disorders in Central America. Nicknamed "grand old man of the marine corps". Introduced higher standards of personal appearance, training, discipline, and strived to have the Coprs known as a professional military force.

|
Sgt Maj Quick is remembered for his performance at Cuzco Well (Guantanamo Bay, Cuba) where he participated in a operation to seize an advanced base for the Atlantic Fleet bn of Marines. Won the Medal of Honor for semaphoring for an emergency lift of the naval bombardment while under Spanish and American shellfire.

|
Sgt Maj is recognized for earning 2 Medals of Honor for Chinese Boxer REbellion and the First Caco War in Hiati. Known for his saying, Come on you sons of a bitches, do you want to live forever? during the battle of belleau wood.

Louis "Chesty" Puller
|
Lt Gen served in Nicaragua thru periods of political unrest and rebellious activity. He and a force of 32 marines became famous for their ability to engage rebel groups and bandits while scouring the jungles of Nicaragua to the Honduran Border. He became known as the "Tiger of the Mountains". The mascot, an english bulldog is named after him as well.

|
Major is recognized for Marine prowess in aerial dogfights. He commanded VMH 214 (the black sheep) during WWII. By the end of the war he was known as the top ranking flying ace with 28 victories.

Cpl, a Pima Indian, was one of the marines immortalized in the photo taken of the 2nd flag raising on Mt Suribachi after the Japanese stronghold on 23 Feb 1945.

Earned the Medal of Honor while serving with the 1st Mar div during the battle of Okinawa. He aided one casualty to another while under gun fire, mortar attacks etc. He also emptied his pistol into the advancing Japanese ranks while aiding, seized a discarded carbine, killed 6 of the enemies despite his own serious wounds and loss of an eye. He became a champion for veterans' causes

|
Famous for his role as one of the 6 men to participate in the flag raising over Iwo Jima. He earned the Navy cross during the battle for running thru motar and gun fire to aid an exposed wounded Marine. He performed treatment while using himself as a shield to his patient. He then pulled him 30 yds thru intense enemy fire to safety.

Robert Ingram
|
Earned the MOH for his actions during the Vietnam War. He crawled thru a bullet spattered terrain during NVA attacks to reach a downed Marine. As he was giving aid a bullet went thru the palm of his hand, but he continued to administer aid and collect ammo from the dead. He received two more wounds, the third being life threatening he still continued aid to others. He sustained his fourth wound while dressing the head of another corpsman. He saved many lives that day despite his pain and probable death.

What are the 7 elements of the Marine Corps?
|
1. Provide FMF with combined arms and supporting air components for service with the US fleet 2. Provide detachments and organizations for service on armed vessels of the Navy and security detachments for the protection of naval property 3. Develop in coordination with Army, Navy, and Air Force, the doctrine, tactics, techniques, and equipment employed by landing forces in amphibious operations 4. Provide Marine forces for airborne operations according to the doctrine est. by the Joint Chiefs of Staff. 5. Develop the doctrine, procedures, and equipment for airborne operations. 6. Expand peacetime components to meet wartime needs 7. Perform other duties as the President may direct.
