Battle of Guadalcanal
7 August 1942, 1st Marine Division, Solomon Islands, launched 1st US land offensive of WWII. 1st combat test of new amphib doctrine, crucial turning point of war in Pacific. Further invasions launched on Japanese held islands: New Georgia, Choiseul (Feint), and Bougainville.
Battle of Tarawa
Japanese Commander claimed it would take 1 million Americans 100 years to conquer island. 20 Nov 1943 Marines secured island in 76 hours. Heavy losses due to extended reef, couldn't land craft- Many Marines drowned , and heavy losses from enemy fire.
Battle of Mariana Islands
For air fields and advanced bases, Saipan, Guam and Tinian invaded. June and July 1943- LGen Holland M. Smith led combo invade force of Marines & soldiers- over 136,000- greatest number of troops till then to operate under Marine command.
Battle of Iwo Jima
19 Feb 1945, largest & bloodiest all Marine battle in history. 23,300 casualties. Admiral Chester Nimitz said" Among the Americans who served on Iwo Island, uncommon valor was a common virtue."
Battle of Chosin Reservoir
North Korea, Nov 1950, of 10 Division Force sent to annihilate Marines- smashed 7 while evacuating to Reservoir while maintaining tactical integrity, brought out all operable equip, and properly evacuation wounded and dead.

Vietnamese Holiday Tet Jan 1968. Communist launched surprise offensive- infiltrated city w/ troops. Fighting house to house- measured progress in yards, city secured 25 Feb 1968.
