Totalitarianism

-Absolute control by the state or a governing branch of a highly centralized institution.


-Form of government that theoretically permits no individual freedom and that seeks to subordinate all aspects of the individual’s life to the authority of the government.


- Is a typology or ideal-type used by some political scientists to encapsulate the characteristics of a number of twentieth century regimes that mobilize entire populations in support of the state or an ideology.

- A state of armed conflicts between different nations or states or different groups within a nation or state.


- A conflict carried on by force of arms, as between nations or between parties within a nation; warfare, as by land, sea, or air.


- Armed fighting between two or more countries or groups.

- A member of a band of irregular soldiers that uses, guerrilla warfare harassing the enemy by surprise raids, sabotaging communication and supply lines, etc.

- An offensive conducted by secret police or the military of a regime against revolutionary and terrorist insurgents and marked by the use of kidnapping and torture and murder with civilians often being the victims.


- A war that is not fought in a conventional way observing the rules of war, but is a clandestine war involving assassinations etc.

The Cold War is the name given to the relationship that developed primarily between the USA and the USSR after World War Two, to dominate international affairs for decades. Major crises occurred - the Cuban Missile Crisis, Vietnam, Hungary and the Berlin Wall being just some. For many, the growth in weapons of mass destruction was the most worrying issue.
