Chromatin
All DNA molecules and associated proteins in a nucleus
Chromatid
An unduplicated strand in the chromosome pair.
Chromosome
A coherent structire consisting of DNA
Placenta
Organ that forms from endometrial tissue and extraembryonic membranes. Allows exchagne of substances between mother and baby and keeping bloodstreams separate.
Centromere
Constricted part of a chromosome to which spindle microtubules attach
Spindle Fiber
Segregates chromosomes during cell division.
Homologous Chromosome
Meaning members of the same pair.
Crossing Over
The exchange of genetic material between chromosomes in a homologous pair.
Haploid
A gamete has this number of chromosomes. (n)
Diploid
The double chromosome number of a zygote. (2n)
Gamete
Sex cell (sperm, egg).
Zygote
Fertilized egg.
Blastocyst
After many cell divisions, this is an early embryo before implantation. It possesses an inner mass of cells.
Embryonic Membranes
Chorion- surrounds all membranes, later forms into placenta
Amnion- surrounds embryo and later the fetus, fluid-filled for shock absorption
Yolk Sac- stores organic nutrients
Allantois- stores wastes
Embryonic Tissues
Ectoderm- embryonic skin and nervous system
Mesoderm- embryonic circulatory, muscle, and skeletal systems
Endoderm- embryonic lining of the digestive, respiratory, and urinary systems
