George McClellan's First Command
Born in Philly on December 3rd, 1826, attends Penn then West Point, graduates second in class, in Mexican War, engineer in military, receives command of Army of the Potomac after Bull Run, fails at the Peninsula campaign, Mclellan relived of command until Antietam, then relieved again in early November

British Vessel carrying two Confederate commissioners to foreign courts, John Slidell and James Mason, USS San Jacinto stops ship and takes Confederates as POWs, Captain Charles Wilkes is temporary hero

Drinking problem - being away from wife and boredom, John Rawlins could handle Grant, won battle of Belmont after departing from Cairo, Illinois

On Tennessee River, under command of Brig. Gen. Tilghman, Grant takes Fort with relative ease on February 6th, 1862
Fort Donelson
On Cumberland River, under command of Simon Buckner, Buckner sends Grant message asking for terms of surrender, Grant wants immediate and unconditional surrender, February 16th, 1862, Buckner surrenders Fort, 14000 Confederate troops captured, group of Confederates led by Nathan Bedford Forrest leave fort
Battle of Shiloh
First true bloodbath, April 6th-7th, 1862, Albert Sydney Johnston vs. Grant, William Tecumseh Sherman is there, Don Carlos Buell coming with Union reinforcements, Johnston is killed on April 6th, Beauregard decides to wait til morning to finish Union army, Buell arrives and Union attacks, technically a Union victory, Confederates pushed back to Corinth, Mississippi, Casualties: Union 13K, Confederates: 10.5K, Halleck relieves Grant of command, Lincoln gives Halleck desk job and reinstates Grant
Merrimac vs. Monitor
March 9th, 1862, battle lasted 4 hours, monitor saves the day, Merrimac destroyed by Confederate troops to prevent Union from seizing it, Monitor wins, then sinks during storm off shore of Cape Hatteras
