What three ingredients does fires need?

O2

Fuel

Heat

*if any one of these 3 ingredients is removed, the fire will extinguish

Four classes of fire:

A. Common materials: wood, paper, most combustibles

B. Flammable liquids: fuel, paint thinner, grease

C. Electrical: coffee makers, ovens, circuit breakers, switches

D. Combustible metals: found in industry mostly outgoing lithium batteries are included

F.I.R.E. acronym defined:

F ind

I nform

R eact

E xtinguish

Typical causes of fire on the plane:

Engine fires

Fire in the cabin

Hidden fires

Firefighting Equipment onboard:

Water extinguisher

Halon extinguisher

PBE

Crash Axe

What's the distance and duration for the water extinguisher?

20 feet / 30 seconds

*feet first

What's the distance and duration for the halon extinguisher?

8-15 feet / 10-15 seconds

*feet first

How long does PBE last?

15 minutes

How do we know PBE is working?

The green LED light will blink

How do we know when O2 is depleting in PBE?

The LED lights will alternate green and red and the hood will start to collapse.

Where is the crash axe located?

F/D

What firefighting equipment is found in the lavs?

Sealed trash compartment

High temperature placard

Smoke detector

Under sink halon

Where do we stow (USED) BCB?

Any AFT lav

What is a ballast fire?

Ballasts are a component of fluorescent lighting, when they short or you may not see smoke or fire....they are usually brief and self extinguish. Notify F/D cut power, class C, use halon

Fighting an oven fire:

Ask F/A to notify F/D & bring backup halon

Pull circuit breakers

Get halon & PBE

crack oven door facing away from fire, using door as shield

Discharge entire halon into the bottom of the oven

Close door immediately

Monitor/keep pilots informed

Fighting lithium battery fire:

Do not pick up or move (w/o protective gloves)

Notify pilots

Don PBE

Get Halon & water extinguishers and more non flammable liquids

Move cu away from fire

Use halon to extinguish flames then cool battery with water extinguisher and other liquids

Keep pilots informed

*If possible move O2 bottles

NO ICE

Stow in BCB keeping in mind it could reignite

Engine torching procedure:

Notify pilots

Calm & reassure customers

If cu try to initiate evacuation.

Command: "Stop-remain seated"

What is engine torching?

During engine start up, there may be a brief burst of flame from exhaust (hot start)

A/C are equipped with fire detection and extinguishing systems in the main wheel well

What is thermal runaway?

The process of increased temperature relaying energy that even further increases the temp.

(Ie: lithium battery reigniting)

What do pilots need to know now, when reporting a fire in the cabin?

What, where, type & can we contain it?

What do we do with used BCB?

Stow in any AFT lav

Lock lav

Label

Monitor

Notify captain used & location
