What is the Fire Triangle?
1. Ignition source: Laser, ESU, drills
2. Oxidizer: O2, N20, Air, 3. Fuel: Drapes, skin, chemicals |
NFPA Rating
Diamond symbol with
- flammability rating(0-4) - Health Hazard rating - Instability rating - unusual hazards |
Who are the players involved in the fire triangle?
Surgeon (ignition)
Fuel(OR Staff) Oxidizer (anesthesia) |
What is combustion?
The chemical process accompanied by light and heat
Oxidation- release of energy or loss of electrons. |
What is Flash Point?
The lowest temperature at which a liquid will generate enough vapor to form an ignitable mixture at it's surface.
--the temperature at which a mixture first burns. |
What is the flammability range?
Determined by the proportion of fuel to O2 in a mixture that will propagate a flame and cause an explosion.
-Lower limit: O2>fuel (lean) -Higher limit: fuel> O2 (rich) |
What is a vapor/air mixture below the lower flammability limit -- where it is too lean to burn or explode?
LFL: Lower Flammable Limit
Too rich to burn?
UFL: Upper Flammable Limit where a mixture is above the upper limit and is too rich to burn or explode.
What is stoichiometric mixtures?
The mixture in which combustion is complete and fuel is oxidized by all O2 present
What is and Adiabatic Compression or expansion?
The change in temperature resulting from compression or expansion transferred to the surrounding environment.
"Cracking" the O2 tank= oil or dust at valve can ignite at this point
What is a type A Fire?
Wood, Paper, textiles
Use Class A Extinguisher( water, silver)
What is a Type B fire?
Flammable liquids/ grease
Use a class BC Extinguisher(CO2, Red, )
What is a class C fire?
Electrical fire
Use a Class BC or ABC extinguisher
What is a ABC Extingusiher used for?
All types of fires. Contains a dry chemical or halon. It is red with a black hose.
What is PASS and RACE?
Pull the Pin
Aim at base of fire Squeeze the handle Sweep side to side Rescue, Alarm, Contain, Extinguish. |
