Montgomery Bus Boycott

Who? Began w/ Rosa Parks, consisted of a large amount of the African American community in the south


What? 381 days, amidst harassment and violence, blacks refuse to ride public transportation in Montgomery.


When? December 1, 1955 (lasted 381 days)


Where? Montgomery, Alabama


Why? The boycott took place in hopes of putting an end to segregation amongst public transportation. One of the mass protests to fight segregation in the U.S.


-November 1956, the u.s supreme court ruled segregation in public transportation unconstitutional.


Significance: it began the modern civil rights movement.

Cesar Chavez

Who? Farmworker who became the face of Latino Movement for UFW (united farm workers).


Founder of the national farmworkers association in 1962.


What? Farmworker, activist responsible for leading nonviolent protest and boycotts to improve labor rights and wages of farmworkers.


When? 1962-1980s


Where? U.S (Arizona, Texas, California, Florida) mostly impacted the western states.


Why? Dedicated his life to reforming labor laws and conditions with his union because after realizing the painstaking work done by farmers for the low wages, he decided to fight for change.


Significance: Made huge changes for farmworkers through his founding of UFW.


Four Freedoms

Who? --four ideas presented by Franklin D. Roosevelt during his state of the union address outlining the U.S war goals suggesting that the future world order was rooted in these basic human freedoms.


What? 1) freedom of speech. 2) freedom of worship. 3) freedom of want. 4) freedom of fear.


When? January 6,1941


Where? U.S


Why? "Four Freedoms" speech was given to provide justification as to why the US was abandoning previous statements about isolationism.


Significance: It helped motivate the civil rights movement. How we view foreign policy. Seeing up the basic ideas of which we should fight for and which the country would be run.

Joseph McCarthy

Who? Senator from Wisconsin, elected on fictional war record.


What? A man who sparked a wave of hysteria accusing as many as 205 people of being communist spies within the government without any supporting evidence.


When? 1950s (starts making accusations in 1950. He was censored and lost his political influence in 1954.


Where? US


Why? Created a large amount of paranoia in the US and took it upon himself to stop anybody that he thought might be working with the enemy against the US. In 1954, hearings were held against many individuals accused by McCarthy and he was then declared a "bully" making accusations without any evidence. Coined the term "McCarthyism".


Significance: He sparked the second red scare.

Roe v. Wade

Who? Texas resident (Roe) wanted an abortion but Texas laws prohibited this.


What? Supreme court case legalizing abortion.


When? 1973.


Where? US


Why? Laws in 46 states were affected. For the first time, the court recognized the constitutional right to privacy.


Significance: Key catalyst in the conservative movement.

A. Philip Randolph

Who? Fought for civil rights, organized threat to hold March on Washington because of wage discrimination.


When? August 28, 1963


Where? Washington


Why? Roosevelt responds with Executive Order 8802. Leading to fair employment commission. Mandated that all factory workers should get the same pay.


Significance? Ultimately mobilized the federal government. Leads the march on Washington in 1963 with Martin Luther King Jr. He pushed for civil rights before the civil rights movement, and sees his actions pay off.

American war in Vietnam

What? American aid of French in Vietnam.


When? 1954-1975


Where? Vietnam


Why? War fought between south Vietnam and North Vietnam. The US government provided to aid southern Vietnam as a part of the containment policy to stop the spread of communism. In 1975, the last American troops to leave Vietnam and 58,000 people died. 4 million Vietnamese civilians.


Significance: Apart of the cold war, US started providing aid for South Korea to fight against communism, USSR states providing aid for North Korea, millions agree dead, which lead to an era of detente.

Betty Friedan

Who? Author of the feminine mystique. Started the modern feminist movement. Also founded NOW (national organization of women) magazine


What? An activist who sparked many feminist protests and boycotts for the equal rights of women in the workplace and government.


When? 1963


Where? US


Why? Opened women's eyes to inequality that they were subjected to everywhere, being the reason that many decided to fight for the rights of women.


Equal Pay Act(1963)


-Dictated federal jobs be paid equally.


-Stated that men were free from social expectations, thus they can spend all their time on education.


Significance: She sparked the modern feminist movement. Her book opened the eyes of millions.

Barry Goldwater

Who/What? An extremist who voted against civil rights act, Republican nominee, Liberalitarian


When? 1964


Where? Arizona (Southwest)


Why (significance)? Shifts republican to conservative/ orientation and builds new coalition/ support in south and southwest


- Rise of the conservative party


- Ran against President Johnson because he was against the civil rights act and lost to Nixon.

Office of War Mobilization

Who/ What? An independent agency of the US government formed to coordinate all government agencies involved in the war effort. The government control over economy: James F. Byrnes; complete control over economy: prices, wages, rents. It as well told landlords how much they can charge/ rent their properties. "Sacrifice over service"


- Sets rationing for meat, cloth, gasoline, metal, coffee...


- Changes daily life/fashion; encourages new innovations, carpool, walking


- Government was serving you and too would sacrifice (through rationing)


When? WWll (formed on May 27, 1943. By FDRs executive order 9347)


Where? US


Why? It encouraged people to put their money towards the war (war bonds =support, interest)

Hart-Cellar Act

Who/ What? Ended quota system in place since 1924, which had excluded immigration from Asia and severely limited it from Africa, southern and eastern Europe. Established a new immigration policy based on reuniting immigrant families


When? 1965

Why (Significance)? •Changed the demographic makeup of the American population


•Immigrants that entered the US under the new legislation came increasingly from Asia, Africa, and Latin America as opposed to Europe.
