What are the steps of Inside Outside Circle?

1. Students form pairs. One student from each pair move to the large circle in the class, facing outward.




2. Remaining students find and face their partners (creating concentric circles)




3. Inside circle students ask a question from their question card; outside circle students answer. Inside circle praise or coach.




4. Partners switch roles. Outside circle student ask, listen, praise or coach.




5. Partner trade question cards.




6. Inside circle rotate clockwise to a new partner.

What is a variation of the Inside Outside Circle?

Instead of creating two circle, two lines are created. Only one move down at the signal.

What are the steps of Numbered Heads Together?

1. Divide the students in groups of 4 and give each student a number from 1 to 4.




2. Ask a question or a problem to the students. They individually write down their best answer.




3. Students collaboratively discuss their answers in groups.




4. The teacher repeats the question and calls on a number.

What are the steps of a Talking Chips?

1. The teacher provides a discussion topic and provides think time.




2. Any student begin the discussion, placing one of his/her chips in the center of the table.




3. Any students with a chip continues discussing, using his/her chip.




4. When all chips are used, teammates each collect their chips and continue their discussion with the talking chips.

What is a variation of Talking Chips?

Give just one chip to each student. They must wait for all students to have used their chip before they all collect their chip and continue the discussion.

What are the steps of a Mix-Pair-Share?

1. Student mix around the room.




2. Teacher calls “Pair”.




3. Student pair up with the person closest to them and give a high five. Students who haven’t found a partner raise their hands to find each other.
