Chapter 13
Definition of team
Is a group of people, working together to achieve a common goal. Consist of members with complementary skill who are committed to a common approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable.
Benefits of effective teams
Improves coordination of care, efficient use of healthcare services, increased job satisfaction among team members, and higher patient satisfaction
Tuckman’s Five stages teams go through
1. Forming – Team members are getting oriented to the team goals and each other, finding out what the tasks are and who they will be working with.
2. Storming – There is intergroup conflict; there can be attempts at dominance, passive-aggressive behavior along with information withholding, and other forms of resistance to team tasks and goals.
3. Norming – Peace breaks out when the storming stage passes and then member begin the performing stage.
4. Performing – Accomplishing the work at hand, having open dialogue with one another, and share information to accomplish the team’s goals.
5. Adjourning - Winding down. Team members who may have disliked each other at the start have worked together over a long period of time and have developed respect for one another.

Health disparity
A population is a health disparity population if…there is significant disparity in the overall rate of disease incidence, prevalence, morbidity, mortality, or survival rates in the populationas compared to the health status of the general population
Joint Commission definition of culturally competent organization
– Is one that is vigilant for ethnic disparities in screening, prescriptions, procedures, and health outcomes and has policies and procedures in place to address an disparities founds.

In general – cultural competency refers to the ability and willingness to respond respectfully and effectively to people of all cultures, classes, races, ages, ethnic backgrounds and religions in a manner that recognizes an values the worth and dignity of all.
