The three temptations persecuted minorities face
1.To blend in.
2. To withdrawal.
3. To retaliate.
The meanings of “aliens and strangers”
We aren’t supposed to act the way the world does. The world should be shocked at how we handle persecution and how we don’t retaliate.
The nature of the persecution they faced
Physical, verbal, emotional. Peter wants them to rejoice in their suffering because the glory of God will be revealed.
The meaning of am-segulah
God’s chosen people, called to be different and set apart.
Baptism and their identification with Jesus’ suffering and glory
3:18-22: when were baptized, we take on the responsibility of taking the Good News to the world and we will be persecuted. But because God is coming back one day, we know glory awaits us. We can identify with Jesus because His journey was one of suffering that ended with victory over death and sin. Through baptism, Christians now share that story --
a story of suffering ending in glory.
1 Peter 1:15
Just as the one who called you is holy, be holy in all you do.
1 Peter 2:21
to this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example that you should follow step by step.

2:24: we are justified through actions, not by faith alone.
What a Christian does = faith and actions together to glorify God (ch 2)
James 1:3-4
because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
James 1:27
Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after your orphans and widows in distress and to keep one’s self from being polluted by the world.
James 5: 16
therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so you may be healed. The prayers of the righteous are powerful and effective.
1 John:
Background is incipient Gnosticism
This basically just means escaping the world through acquiring knowledge about God and His teachings. It’s the revealing of God’s teachings.
1 John:
Dualism
A feature of Gnosticism: says our bodies are bad and our spirits are good, but they are separate. You could take this in one of two directions: toward God and sanctifying your body just as your spirit is pure…or you could be a party Gnostic.
1 John:
Docetism (emphasizes the incarnation of Jesus)
Means “seems like” this teaching says Jesus wasn’t really human because human’s sin and He didn’t. John says that’s why He is God and we are not.
1 John
All Christians sin
Redemption saves us. Yet they are in the light and can know they have eternal life
1 John 1:7
but if we walk in the light as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his son, purifies us from all sin.
1 John 3:16-17
this is how we know what love is: that Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need and has no pity for him, how can the love of God be in him?
