- fever enhances ability to defend against infection
- we can use fever as a clinical tool for monitoring infection.. treating it would impair that ability
- most fevers are harmless

Why are antipyretics given before tepid water sponging (to treat fever)?
- tepid water sponging does not reset hypothalamic set point... body may work harder to maintain this elevated temp => shivering
- antipyretic will reduce hypothalamic set point
What is the adult and pediatric dose for acetaminophen?
Adults: 325 - 650mg q4-6hr prn

kids: 10-15mg/kg q4-6hr prn (no more than 5 doses or 65mg/kg/day)
