4- Placenta
What is the foramen ovale?
An opening between the right and lft atria.
What does the foramen ovale allow?
Highly oxygenated blood returning from the placenta to the right atrium to cross directly over to the left side, bypassing the lungs, and going into peripheral circulation. (After birth the foramen ovale begins to seal up)
What is the ductus arteriosis?
A vessel that joins the pulmonary artery to the aorta.

What is the ductus venosus?
A fetal liver bypass
What does the ductus venosus do?
It allows the inferior vena cava to transport nutrient laden blood directly to the right side of the heart (right atrium).
What happens to the allantois after birth?
It is tied off with ligatures, cut and knotted.
What are happens to the iliac arteries?
They become much smaller after birth.
Twins that arise from separately fertilized eggs are called what?

When does separation of the zygote into monozygotic twins occur?
At the end of the 2 cell stage during the cleavage divisions.
