Metar report

Aviation routine weather reports

Observation taken 55-59 min.

SPECI

Unscheduled observation when a pre defined condition criteria changes to an original Metar report

Auto

Refers to an observation taken from an unattended automated surface observation system (ASOS).

AO1

Is an ASOS without a rain vs Snow discriminator

AO2

Is AN ASOS WITH a rain vs Snow discriminator

COR

Is an observation corrected for an error. Disregard the previous transmission.

Wind direction

Reported wind direction and magnetic north. Reported in knots and true Direction

Prevailing winds (sustained)

Is the average Direction / speed over the 2 minutes CONUS 10 minutes OCONUS notice immediately preceding the observation.

Gusts

Are a sudden brief increase in speed with a variation of 10 knots or more between Peaks and lulls. 10 minutes immediately preceding observation.

Squall

A very large variation of wind speed. Used when wind speed increases by at least 16 knots and is sustained at 22 knots or more for at least 1 minute.

Wind variability

Is reported if the direction varies by 60 degrees and speeds greater than 6 knots. Separated by a V.

Prevailing visibility

Is the greatest horizontal visibility observed throughout at least half the Horizon Circle and is not necessarily continuous.

Sector visibility

Reported in the remarks section if it differs from the prevailing and is less than 3 miles.

Runway visual range RVR

Is reported when the prevailing visibility is 1 statute mile or less and/or the RVR for the designated Runway is 6000 feet/1830 meters or less.

Clouds

Reported in eighths for coverage and hundreds of feet AGL for heights. Automated systems to not report Cloud bases above 12000 feet.

Temperature and dew point

Reported in Celsius. First two digits are temperature and second two digits is the dew point. M means minus or below zero.

Squall line

Are identified by a line of high radar reflectivity.

Microburst

May have 100 knots of wind and severe downdrafts which can greatly impact takeoff and Landing. Are short in duration small in size compared to thunderstorms.

Combat Weather Team CWT

Primary point of contact for briefings and operational weather support.

METAR FLOW

Station, date/time, auto a01/a02, correction, winds with gusts, wind variability, visibility, rvr, types of weather, clouds, temperature/dew point/altimeter, remarks
