Why was Athens so difficult to conquer?
Athens was one of the most strongly fortified cities in the world. Its walls were 70 feet high and made of thick blocks of hard smooth stone. It was also well supplied with food.

What was remarkable about Sulla's victory in Charonea?
Sulla only had about 40,000 men fighting on his side while Mithridates (defending Caronea) had a force of 120,000 men. Sulla won the battle and was said to only have lost 12 men in the fighting.
