If you think of tendinopathy as a continuum, what are the 3 phases?
reactive tendinopathy, tendon dysrepair (failed healing) and degenerative tendinopathy
What is the primary driver in changing the stage someone is in for tendinopathy?
increasing or decreasing the load on the tendon
What are the general cellular changes that occur during reactive teninopathy?
- cells more chondroid
- increased proteoglycan production with change in matrix **These thicken the tendon, reduces stress and increases stiffness |
Describe tendon changes in the tendon dysrepair phase of tendinopathy
- increased cells (chondrocytic, myofibroblasts)
- marked increase in protein production (proteoglycan and collagen), which separate the collagen - may be an increase in vascularity and associated neuronal ingrowth |
