What does the standards division of CSA do? How many committees and volunteers are there and how many fields do they write standards for? How many standards have been set?

Sets standards by organizing committee of volunteers who write standards for about 35 major fields eg) healthcare, sports wear, etc.



There are 1000 committees with over 8000 volunteers who write standards for over 35 major fields.




About 1400 standards have been set.


Who can request standards changes?

Anyone can request that a standard be prepared or changed. The request is reviewed by the committee before action is taken.

What does the certification division of the CSA do? 3 Main Points

1. Testing; samples are evaluated according to standards


2. Inspecting; plant inspections are carried out to ensure that a plant is capable of constantly producing product in accordance with the standards, and that the product complies with standards as well.


3. Certification; Licenses are issued to give the right to use the CSA mark of approval.

Specialized division examples are the Canadian welding bureau and the Canadian Lumber Standards Division.

1. Interchangeability of components such as bolts, nuts, bricks etc.


2. Consistency for example surface finish, shape etc.


3. Reliability in that it performs the required function.



What is the NBC? Is it law? Why would additions be required to the NBC?

NBC is the National Building Code. It is law in Alberta under the Alberta Uniform Building Standards Act. It is not law nation wide.




Additions were required by the Alberta Building Regulations due to climate, industrial activities, and new technology in Alberta.

Occupational Heath and Safety Regulations. The regulations cover many aspects of a workers job related activities, including safety.

Codes that have been adapted into law. Regulations must be followed while codes are merely a recommendation.

1. Assess worksite to identify hazards before work begins

2. Prepare accurate reports of hazard assessment and the methods used to control or eliminate it

5. Must ensure PPEis used by workers affected by hazards (or combo of all three above)


6. In an emergency, only the minimum required,necessary number of workers should deal with the emergency
