Null Hypothesis
A statement of no differnce or no relationship

H0: m1 = m2

-Reliability of results
-States no differences between treatments, or no relationships between variables
-If there is a difference or a relationship: null hypothesis should be rejected
Alternative Hypothesis
A logical state of reality that must exist if the null hypothesis is not true.

HA : m1 ≠ m2
Type 1 Error
Rejecting the null hypothesis when it is true.
Type 2 Error
Accepting the null hypothesis when it is false
Level of Significance
The statistical reference point that is selected for the purpose of accepting or rejecting th enull hypotheses.
Alpha (probability)
-Probability of finding a difference when there is no difference
-Level of significance
-Typically : p < .05 or p < .01
Beta (probability)
-Probability of not finding a difference, when there is a difference
When should a One-tailed test be appropriate?
When the researcher has a strong sense of the direction of the outcome.
-Hypothesis : m1 > m2 or
m1 < m2
When should a two tailed test be appropriate?
When the researcher cannot hypothesize about the direction of the outcome.
-Hypothesis : m1 ≠ m2
