a characteristic of a system that regulates its internal environment and tends to maintain a stable, relatively constant condition of properties. Reason why our body composition stays the same.

Homeostasis

challenges to our bodies mental and physical ability

stresses

5 areas of major concern when trying to maintain homeostasis are...

Body temperature

Blood pressure

glucose levels

PH levels

Fluid/Electrolyte balance

sensors capable of detecting change

receptor

receives/processes information from different sensors and acts upon fixing any deviations from standard body norms such as body temperature through an effector

Integration Center

(example: If the body temperature goes above 98F then the sensor will detect a deviation, the Integration Center will PROCESS this and activate sweat glands to lower body temp)

Particular muscles or glands activated by integration center to get back to normal state

Effectors

a reaction in which the system responds in such a way as to reverse the direction of change. Since this tends to keep things constant, it allows the maintenance of homeostasis. For instance, when the concentration of carbon dioxide in the human body increases, the lungs are signaled to increase their activity and expel more carbon dioxide.

Negative feedback

Where are receptors and integrators located for body temperature?

receptors: skin and hypothalamus

Integrators: Hypothalamus

What are the effectors for body temperature?

Sweat glands, constriction of blood vessels, shivering

Where are the receptors and integrators located for blood pressure?

receptors: blood vessels and heart

Integrators: Control center in brain

what are the effectors for blood pressure?

Heart and blood vessels

recepter/integrator location for glucose levels?

What are the effector(s)?

Hypothalamus

effector: Pancreas

receptor location for PH levels?

Integrator location for PH levels?

Effector for PH levels?

medulla

activity in which body can maintain steady state/ homeostasis

submaximal exercise

activity in which body may not be able to maintain steady state/ homeostasis

maximal exercise

example of severe disturbance in homeostasis

Heat stroke :(
