What is a Twitch? |
When a muscle quickly contracts and relaxes after a single electrical shock of sufficient voltage. |
|
What is Frequency Summation? |
Process by which individual twitches combine, start stacking up or piggy-backing on each other; Produces sustained contraction; Can lead to tetanic contractions. |
|
What is Tetanus? |
The plateau effect at the top of the frequency summation |
|
What is Complete Tetanus? |
At a certain frequency there will be no relaxation (jagged), this results in fatigue. |
|
What is Incomplete Tetanus? |
Increasing the frequency of electrical shocks decreases the relaxation time between twitches. |
|
What is a Gradational Response? |
Healthy muscle contractions are relatively smooth and vary in strength dependent on the demands placed on them. There variations are graded responses. |
|
What is an Isotonic Contraction? |
Iso = same Ton = tension
Muscle length changes to move a load (EX: picking up a book, kicking a ball) |
|
What is Isometric Contraction? (2) |
* The muscle can't shorten because the load is too great * Muscle contracts but doesn't change length. (Ex: Can't pick up lab table) |
|
What is an Eccentric Contraction? (2) |
* Lengthening contraction * Your calf muscle as you walk up a hill |
