Self Cognitive/Self Efficacy Theory

Brings together self-efficacy and outcome expectations, relating the performance of a behavior change to the individual’s expectation of

(1) the person’s ability and

(2) the probability of success in accomplishing the change.

Health Belief Model

Involves the desire to avoid illness or to get well. Further, the person believes that a specific action will avoid illness or lead to wellness. The possibility of illness and the potential consequences of that illness are perceived by the person themselves.

Theory of Reasoned Action

involves the assessment of behaviors before they are attempted. The probability of behavior change is determined by:

1) behavioral intention

2) attitude toward the behavior

3) subjective norms

Theory of Planned Behaviors

Includes the components of the Theory of Reasoned Action and adds another component: whether or not the individual has control over the intention to change.

Transtheoretical Model of Change

Precontemplation: patient is not considering a change in the next 6 months

Contemplation: patient is considering a change in the next 6 months

Preparation: patient is beginning to take steps to implement a change

Action: patient is consistently engaged in the behavior

Maintenance: patient has been engaged in the behavior for 6 months or longer.
