What are nursing actions we do when giving analgesics?
1. Monitor FHR

What is Gestation?
Gestation = prenatal age of the developing fetus
Describe the difference between Gravida and Para.
Gravida = total number of times a woman has been pregnant, including the present one.

Para = the number of a womans pregnancies that have ended after at least 20 weeks gestation.
How is stillbirth different from abortion?
Stillbirth = fetus born dead AFTER gestation of 20 weeks. This is still considered a para.

Abortion = pregnancy that ends before 20 weeks gestation.
What are the 2 types of abortions?
Spontaneous abortion (SAB) = one that occurs naturally

Therapeutic abortion (TAB) = intentional termination of the pregnancy
A patient is pregnant for the 5th time. She has had:
1. One elective abortion at 8 weeks
2. A daughter after 30 weeks
3. A son after 38 weeks
4. A stillbirth after 42 weeks.

What is her gravida and para?
Gravida 5

Whats the difference in care given for a primip vs a multip at 7 cm dilation?
Multip is going to have the baby fast. Get her an epidural and ready to delivery asap.

Primip ideally will still have 3 hours to go (1 cm dilation per hour ideally for first time mothers) so its not as urgent
During labor, what are you going to do for the patient to ensure adequate oxygenation?
Raise patients head at least 30 degrees to assist with breathing
How much does the mothers blood volume increase during pregnancy?
Around 50%
During labor, what are you going to do for the patient to help with circulation?
Position the mother laterally to optimize cardiac output and placental blood flow
Your patient has a her membrane ruptured and a few hours later a rise in tempurature, what do you suspect? What are some nursing actions you will do for this?
Intrauterine infection

After ROM, the moms tempurature should be assessed at least every 2 hours
Your patients just received an epidural, what is necessary for her to get via IV?
IV fluids are necessary to keep the blood pressure from dropping to much
Due to the fluids the mother is receiving during labor, what must you check for every 2 hours?
Bladder distension. Try to get the patient to the bathroom every 2 hours.
