Species
a group of similar organisms that can mate with each other and produce fertile offspring.
Fossil
the preserved remains or traces of an organism that lived in the past.
Adaptation
a trait that helps an organism survive and reproduce.
Theory
A hunch or a guess.
Scientific theory
Drawing observations together to make one inference.
Observations/ Data------> Inferences-------> Theory
Natural selection
The process by which individuals that are better adapted to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce than other members of the same species.
Variation
Any difference between individuals of the same species.
Fitness
The ability to survive and reproduce.
Mutation-
○ Substitution- Exchange one base pair for another.
○ Deletions- remove DNA.
○ Insertions (addition)- add DNA.
Speciation
The divergence, or branching, or one species into two distinct species.
Adaptive radiation
When one species branches into many different species.
Homologous structures
Similar structures that related species have inherited from a common ancestor.
Branching tree
A diagram that shows how scientists think different groups of organisms are related.
Trace fossil
The evidence (track, trail, footprint) left behind from an organism.
Paleontologist
a scientist that studies fossils.
