even number
a number is even if it ends in a
0, 2, 4, 6, or 8.
whole number
a number that contains no
decimals or fractions.
divisibility test
a way to tell whether a whole number can be divided equally by another whole number, without actually doing the division

a number being multiplied in a

the number that is the answer to a multiplication problem

two factors of a number that multiplied together give you the number.

factor rainbow
a way to show factor pairs in a list of all the factors of a number
factor string
a string of numbers written a as product of at least 2 factors. It never contains the number 1!
ex. 2x3x4 is a factor string for 24
prime number
a number (greater than 1) that has exactly 2 factors, 1 and itself.
ex. 7 (only 1 x 7 = 7)
composite number
a number that has more than two factors.
ex. 9 (1 x 9 = 9 and 3 x 3 both = 9)
prime factorization
a number written as a product of factors that are all prime numbers.
ex. for 24: 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 (this is a prime factor string!)
factor tree
a way to find all the prime factors of a number (a way to do prime factorization) by breaking down all the factors of a number until they are prime
exponential notation
a way of writing repeated multiplication by the same factor
exponent
the small raised number that tells you how many times you multiply the number by itself
square number
a number that is the product of a number and itself
square root
the number you multiply by itself to get a square number
