China seemed to be growing stronger under Chiang Kai Shek and Japan thought this might result in it's being excluded from Manchuria. It was a valuable trade outlet, with a population of 30 mill, and they had invested a lot in it's devpt. Japan was also suffering economic hardship because of the great depression |

Japanese announced that they had turned Manchuria into an independent state of Manchukuo under Pu Yi, the last of the Chinese emperors |
