Introspection is not particularly accurate

• We have very little knowledge of causes of our behavior and attitudes

• This can challenge the value of introspective reports

• For example, a person may be implicitly racist, which influences the way they react to members of a different ethnic group. However, because they are not aware of these attitudes, self-reports through introspection would not uncover them

Introspection is still useful in scientific psychology

• Researchers have used introspective methods as a way of making 'happiness' a measurable phenomenon

• They gave a group of teenagers beepers that went off during random times throughout the day

• Participants has to write down their thoughts and feelings in the moments before the beep

• Most of the entries indicated that the teens were unhappy rather than happy, but they also found that when the participants focused on a challenging task, they tended to be happier

Limitations of a scientific approach to psychology

• By focusing on objective methods and night levels of control in observations, scientific psychologists create unnatural environment

• This questions the overall external validity of much of the research
