How did the balance of power in revolutionary France shift to the right during winter, 1794/95?
Power shifted to right, more conservative. New laws forbade harsh treatment of nobles & clergy. Revolution became more moderate. This caused backlash from the left. Violent mobs of middle class youth took to the streets. Many of the Jacobins in charge of the Terror were put on trial and/or imprisoned, sometimes massacred. The backlash was really strong in the provinces, called the White Terror.
How did sans-culottes try to regain control of the Convention? Why were their efforts unsuccessful?
Sans culottes lacked effective leaders, tried to regain power by storming the Convention. They wanted to implement the older Constitution of 1973 and lower food prices. The convention was not intimidated by the storming. Sans culottes leaders were fired from their occupations & arrested. A massive march burst open Assembly’s hall doors, but was forced out by armed men. Another demonstration happened, but ended in peace. The sans culottes failed due to lack of leadership and organization.

What were the major provisions of the new government under the Constitution of the Year Three?
