Both Columbus and Magellan underestimated the width of the oceans they would cross and how much supplies and rations they would need; however, while Magellan was killed when he made the mistake of getting involved in a local conflict, Columbus' involvement with the natives of America led to much different and more devastating consequences (mainly for the natives)
